NASSAU, Bahamas — A boater who disappeared off Jaws Beach – on an island where one of the "Jaws" movies was filmed – is likely the person whose remains were found in the belly of a shark, police say.

Authorities used fingerprints to identify Judson Newton, although they are still waiting for DNA test results, Assistant Police Commissioner Hulan Hanna said late Tuesday.

It is unclear if the 43-year-old Newton was alive when he was eaten.

Newton went on a boating trip with friends off Jaws Beach on New Providence Island on Aug. 29 and encountered engine trouble. Rescuers who responded to a call for help found three men aboard who said that Newton and a friend jumped into the water to try to swim back to shore. Officials launched a search for them, but neither was found.

On Sept. 4, a local investment banker caught the 12-foot (3.6-meter) tiger shark while on a deep-sea fishing trip and he said a left leg popped out of its mouth as they hauled it in.

When officers with the island's defense force cut the shark open, they found the right leg, two severed arms and a severed torso.

One of Newton's friends, Samuel Woodside, 37, told The Associated Press that he was surprised when he heard police say Newton probably drowned.

"To me, he was always a strong swimmer," Woodside said. "I don't know what happened."

s-NY-GOVERNORS-RACE-large300 This week's newly-minted Tea Party Prom King and Queen -- New York gubernatorial nominee Carl Paladino and Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell -- could not be more different. She's a hyper-chaste critic of sexual deviance who would not even tell a lie to Hitler, he's a foul-mouthed fan of bestiality porn. But they have at least one thing in common: prominent members of their own party who think each is unfit for office!

Previously, Tom Ross, the chairman of Delaware's state Republican party, averred that O'Donnell was "not a viable candidate for any office in the state of Delaware," adding "She could not be elected dog catcher." Sounding a similar alarm today is former Senator Alphonse D'Amato -- one of New York's best-known Republicans. Over at ThinkProgress, Faiz Shakir reports:

Paladino's radical, divisive, and disturbing record isn't setting well with one of New York's most famous Republicans -- former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato. "He is dangerous, at the least, he is mean spirited and he tries to divide people," D'Amato told WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell. Along with former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and former State Comptroller Carl McCall, D'Amato also signed his name to an open letter declaring Paladino unfit for office:

The victory of Carl Paladino in the Republican Primary was a disappointing day for all New Yorkers. This state has a long history of electing highly qualified, forward-looking statewide candidates -- both Democrats and Republicans. Yesterday, however, anger overcame reason and enabled a fringe element to choose the Republican nominee. The end result was the selection of Mr. Paladino, a divisive figure simply not fit to lead this great state.

In an interview with the New York Times today, Paladino makes it clear that he hates everybody! He hates Andrew Cuomo because of footage he's seen "on the newsreels" (apparently, Paladino gets his information from a 1940s movie theater). He hates Brooklyn and Manhattan because of the traffic. Democratic State Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver is a "dictator." And there's apparently some sort of "monster" that's been constructed out of "take-home vehicles" that's causing a "morale problem" in Albany.

But if there's one thing he loves, it's his campaign furry, Amber, who likes to dress up as a duck:

Amber is one of those very unassuming types, but once you put that duck outfit on her, she quacks like they've never quacked before. So a few weeks ago we sent her out to Wyoming County. And she's doing her quack quack thing. So finally Andrew gets really frustrated with them and asks one of his characters to go over and get rid of her.

So the guy goes over to Amber, and he doesn't know it's a woman in the suit, and he says, "Listen buster, you'd better get out of here and take your two girlfriends" -- he's referring to the two guys -- "take your two girlfriends with you, or I'm going to shove that sign down your throat." Well you know what Amber does? Quack quack quack quack quack quack quack. She went back in his face. Amber's a third-degree black belt.

s-MIDEAST-ISRAEL-YOM-large300 Thousands of conservatives will be coming to Washington, D.C. this week for one of the biggest religious right conferences of the year: the annual Values Voter Summit, put on by the advocacy arm of the Family Research Council. While the event always attracts a large number of conservative luminaries, there may be one group of values voters missing: Jewish Americans. This year, the conference happens to be scheduled during Yom Kippur.

The 2010 gathering will feature appearances by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Senator Rick Santorum, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and former governor Mitt Romney, among others. There will even be a panel discussion on the important ties between members of the Jewish and Christian faiths:

WHY CHRISTIANS SHOULD SUPPORT ISRAEL - Palladian Room
Victor Styrsky, Eastern Regional Director, Christians United for Israel; Kristi Hamrick (Moderator), President, Campaign for Working Families; Bishop Harry Jackson, Senior Pastor, Hope Christian Church; Joel Rosenberg, New York Times Best-Selling Author and President, The Joshua Fund

Christians and Jews have been uniquely linked for more than 2,000 years. Sometimes working together; Sometimes in terrible conflict. But recently, Christians and Jews have explored the mystery of their union in unprecedented ways, achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. The historic roots of Christianity in Judaism are clear. But in modern times, Christians and Jews have found new reasons and new commitments to work together. Both face common adversaries in secular humanism and radical Muslim opposition. Both benefit from the framework of democracy with its freedom of religion. Today, more than ever, Christians and Jews must embrace their mutual need of each other, celebrate their common goals and heritage, and establish working relationships. Gary Bauer's American Values presents a panel of experts well versed in this unique relationship, who are able to address the political, historical and spiritual connections between Christians and Jews.

Yet it's unlikely observant Jews will be able to attend the event, since it's being held on Yom Kippur -- the holiest Jewish holiday -- which begins at sundown on Friday, Sept. 17 and ends at sundown on Saturday, Sept. 18 -- right when the majority of the action at the conference is happening (including the Israel panel). In 2009, the Values Voter Summit took place during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. "Does the FRC think Jews don't have values?" wondered Salon's Washington Correspondent Mike Madden last year. "Or was this just the only fall weekend they could get into the Omni Shoreham hotel?"

Anti-Defamation League spokesman Todd Gutnick said his organization didn't see much of a problem with the conflict in timing. "Since these are all Christian groups involved, Jews wouldn't be attending anyway," he told the Huffington Post. Some conservative groups, however, are trying to make inroads with the Jewish community, recognizing that although some on the right consistently accuse progressives of being anti-Israel or even "anti-Jew", Jews still overwhelmingly vote Democratic. On Monday, FreedomWorks, which helps organize many of the Tea Party gatherings around the country, told reporters that it was launching "a new initiative to reach out to racial, ethnic and religious minorities" -- beginning with Jews, to coincide with the High Holidays.

s-LISA-MURKOWSKI-JOHN-CORNYN-large300 Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee has issued a clear warning to Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), telling her that she risks losing her party leadership role if she goes through with recent plans to run for reelection as a write-in candidate, Politico reports.

"It's hard to see how you stay as part of the Republican leadership if you are no longer running as a Republican," Cornyn said according to Politico. "I think that's pretty much the end of that."

Sen. Murkowski currently serves as the vice chairwoman NRSC and has more than $1 million in funds potentially available to her if she remains on the ballot in November.

On Wednesday, Fox News reported that Murkowski is strongly considering running as a write-in candidate after her shocking loss in the GOP primary to Tea Party-backed Joe Miller. Murkowski had sought to run as a Libertarian third-party candidate, but the Alaska Libertarian Party rejected her candidacy last month, saying that her voting record disqualified her from that party affiliation.

Despite a temporary period of animosity between then-candidate Joe Miller and the NRSC, Sen. Cornyn was resolute in his backing of the man who toppled Murkowski.

"The nominee is Joe Miller," Cornyn said, according to Politico.

57877124 BFFs, in case you feel like you don’t know the real story behind Danielle leaving The Real Housewives of New Jersey don’t worry because we have the answers!
Danielle Staub wants to set the record straight! The reality star and Bravo villain spoke with HollywoodLife.com moments after announcing to the world she was departing from the show that made her a star. But the mom-of-two sat down with HollywoodLife.com again, in the aftermath of the shocking news, to discuss why she decided to walk away from The Real Housewives of New Jersey.

“I was positively not fired,” said a very excited Danielle. “It was me knowing that I got into a place where there was nothing left. It had already gotten physical and there was nothing left for them [the other housewives] to do but maybe kill me.”

Despite the constant feuding with former castmate Teresa Giudice and the hair pulling incident heard round the world with Jacqueline Laurita’s daughter, Ashley — Danielle hasn’t let that taint her view of reality television.

“You will see me on reality TV,” she tells HollywoodLife.com. “You’re going to be seeing me, Danielle Staub, that there is so much that I have to offer. You’ll see the real me, whether it’s on a red carpet, at home with my kids, or eating cake with kids with no forks! The show will show I AM a villain but at the end of the day I deal with all of my issues.”

But Danielle feels that her departure will leave a void on the New Jersey series.

“I’m the Susan Lucci of reality TV,” she exclaimed. “I think the show will survive but do I think it will be where it is now? No I don’t, none of the other franchises were recognized in this fashion.”

After two eventful seasons, Danielle feels like this was the perfect time to end her time on the show.

“I left peacefully and I have a beautiful ending,” she says. “Everything I go through on reality TV or in life is a lesson learned and I don’t live my life with regrets. I make no apologies. I don’t have to sleep with an eye open anymore.”

s-OIL-SPILL-large300 In a dramatic illustration of regulatory capture, a new report from an Interior Department review board has found that poorly trained, ill-equipped and overextended federal inspectors who were supposed to be policing the nation's offshore oil and gas drilling facilities were routinely bullied by industry representatives and were often undercut by their managers when they reported safety violations.

The review board was appointed after a BP rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April, causing the worst accidental offshore oil spill in history. Its report paints a devastating picture of the Minerals Management Service, the agency now known as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE).

Rather than take issue with the report's findings, BOEMRE's new reform-oriented director, Michael Bromwich, has responded with an implementation plan aimed at fixing the problems.

John M. Broder writes for the New York Times:

The report recommended hiring dozens of new inspectors and giving additional training to those already on the job. It also urged a more robust system of enforcement, including greater authority to cite violations and impose fines....

"To a substantial degree, we fully concur with the recommendations," Mr. Bromwich said in a telephone briefing for reporters. "Without knowing them in advance, we're moving to implement the bulk of them."

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Wednesday that his department will spend $29 million to increase the number and training of offshore drilling inspectors, upgrade enforcement and take others steps to improve oversight.

He told reporters he hopes to hire hundreds of new inspectors to supplement the 60 or now responsible for about 3,500 drilling rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Congress recently authorized the emergency spending.

Who's to Blame for Human Suffering?

September 7th, 2010 by Andrew

s-SUFFERING-large300 How can one believe in a loving God who allows the innocent to suffer? I've been asked this many times, and I've never been quick to answer. Subconsciously, I've probably asked much the same thing in the past.

While I may not frame the matter this way now, it remains a useful question, if only because it reveals a premise I am no longer willing to buy -- the illusion of individual autonomy.
The question reveals a keen ignorance regarding how intimately we are connected to one another -- both now and forever -- and more or less ignores the extreme freedom that the God appears to insist upon in creation. Those phenomena, together, provide a clue about why all this suffering isn't exactly God's doing.
Sooner than later, we'll want to puzzle over the God's curious insistence on the radical freedom of creation -- its inhabitants and the volatile earth itself; but for now, let's attend to the business of our intimate connection with one another and to the suffering caused by human failure.

I daresay that if the innocent suffer they do so because one of us -- you or me or some other thug -- now or in the past has set their pain in motion. If the innocent continue to suffer they do so because we have yet to take responsibility for their pain; we have yet to take sufficient responsibility for their relief.
Our failure to appreciate the degree of our own responsibility enables our famous disinterest in those who suffer, allows us a continuing, dim-witted, and blithe condemnation of those in pain or in poverty. We suspect that something has caused their situation, but our failure to see our own hands in the mess leaves us thinking those suffering are somehow to blame. We shake our heads as we stand by or as we turn away, feeling both helpless and -- assuming that we're not completely dead yet -- a little culpable.

That faintest whiff of our own culpability is subtle evidence that there may be hope for us yet.
In The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky's Father Zosimas manifests a keen sense of this culpability. "There is only one salvation for you," he says to his gathered brotherhood: "take yourself up, and make yourself responsible for all the sins of men. For indeed it is so, my friends, and the moment you make yourself sincerely responsible for everything and everyone, you will see at once that it is really so, that it is you who are guilty on behalf of all and for all."
And there is an even greater consequence that Zosimas would alert us to: "Whereas by shifting your own laziness and powerlessness onto others, you will end by sharing in Satan's pride and murmuring against God."
